Led by Dr. Philip D. Lanoue, who has received both state and national recognition for his educational leadership, PDL Consultants is committed to supporting the emerging role of leaders needed for the success of all students - taking them to places they never thought they could be.



Philip D. Lanoue, Ph.D. has a demonstrated record in leading school transformation at the building and district levels. Dr. Lanoue is the 2015 American Association of School Administrators (AASA) National Superintendent of the Year, as well as the 2015 Georgia Superintendent of the Year. Before serving at the superintendency level across two systems,


Dr. Lanoue was a high school principal in Vermont and Massachusetts, leading four schools toward excellence. While principal of Burlington High School in Vermont, he was named the Vermont National Association of School Principals, Principal of the Year.

Dr. Lanoue was named as one of the nation’s top 50 educational innovators in digital learning by Converge magazine. He has served on the White House Policy Advisory for the New Generation High School Summit, the ConnectED Future Ready White House Summit, the Advisory Council for the Georgia School Boards Association, and a member of Georgia’s AdvancED Council.

Dr. Lanoue regularly adds to the public discourse about education, leadership, and the future of children through his blogs, his guest columns, and webinars. He writes a monthly blog for TrustEDCourse Correction, and he was named one of the top educational voices (authors, writers, speakers, and experts) who are keeping K-12 issues in the national dialogue. Dr. Lanoue has co-authored refereed journal articles in both scholarly and practitioner journals including School Leadership & ManagementLEARNing, and Educational Leadership. He has also co-authored chapters in edited books including the forthcoming, Wiley Handbook of Educational Supervision (Wiley & Blackwell). He released his new book written in collaboration with Dr. Sally Zepeda entitled, The Emerging Work of Today's Superintendent: Leading Schools and Communities to Educate All Children, in June of 2018.

New Book


Dr. Lanoue recently released a new book, The Emerging Work of Today’s Superintendent: Leading Schools and Communities to Educate all Children, with colleague Dr. Sally Zepeda.

The focus is on the emerging role of the superintendent that now must lead with new skills in a time when the landscape of communities is shifting. To lead districts that support students for the world they will enter, superintendents will need to ask new questions on the current architect of schools as they navigate the changes needed in education to meet the needs of all children.



Course Correction

As a thought-leader, Dr. Lanoue writes a monthly blog moving beyond stale education rhetoric to new thinking & bold ideas for K12 schools and their leaders. Course Correction is a monthly column on school leadership. It was created to provide a safe space for the kind of contemporary, tradition-breaking thinking that is required to change the learning landscape for ALL students. 

“Change. We talk about it in schools every day. As educators, we are locked in a constant struggle to improve for all students. That’s a good thing. But there’s a problem with change: We have a tendency to focus only on what’s directly in front of us, often based solely on our own experiences.

As a former school district superintendent and school building principal, I know the feeling. With so much to think about in the day-to-day operations of running a school—or a district, for that matter—the prospect of big, complex, and downright scary change can seem overwhelming.

But we can’t let that stop us. Big change is what’s needed in our schools. And it starts at the top—with school and district leaders who are committed to embracing the transformational work of school improvement, both inside and outside classroom walls.”



Dr. Lanoue often works alongside Dr. Sally J. Zepeda to build bridges between practice and research, and they have written extensively about the role of district and school leaders in supervision and evaluation.

Dr. Zepeda is a Professor in the Department of Lifelong Education, Administration, and Policy at the University of Georgia.

Prior to entering higher education, Dr. Zepeda spent 17 years in K-12 education serving as an English teacher and school administrator. Her research, teaching, and service focus on supervision, evaluation, and the professional learning and development for teachers, principals, and other school leaders. She has authored numerous books, articles, book chapters, monographs, and reports that detail leveraging research and best practices related to supervision, evaluation, succession planning, and the work of the principal and superintendent. Dr. Zepeda has worked with school systems nationally and internationally.
